Gregg Popovich Retires as Coach of the Spurs; Mitch Johnson Takes the Helm

Gregg Popovich steps down after a legendary 29-year career as head coach, transitioning to President of Basketball Operations.

After an impressive tenure spanning 29 seasons, Gregg Popovich is stepping down from his role as head coach of the San Antonio Spurs, shifting to the position of President of Basketball Operations. The announcement was made jointly by Popovich and the team.

“While my love and passion for the game remain, I’ve decided it’s time to step away as head coach,” Popovich stated. “I’m forever grateful to the wonderful players, coaches, staff, and fans who allowed me to serve them as the Spurs head coach and am excited for the opportunity to continue to support the organization, community, and city that are so meaningful to me.”
“Aunque mi amor y pasión por el juego permanecen, he decidido que es hora de alejarme como entrenador principal…”

Peter J. Holt, the Spurs’ Managing Partner, remarked on Popovich’s profound influence, noting, “His accolades and awards don’t do justice to the impact he has had on so many people. He is truly one-of-one as a person, leader, and coach.”

Mitch Johnson, who served as acting head coach during Popovich’s recent absence due to health issues, has now been officially named the full-time head coach. Johnson is familiar with the Spurs’ system, having been part of Popovich’s coaching staff for six seasons.

Popovich retires with an astonishing record of 1,422 regular-season victories, a record number of wins that notably places him first in NBA history for coaches in that category. His long-lasting impact on the franchise includes five NBA championships achieved during his tenure.

This past season, the Spurs had a record of 34-48, finishing in 13th place in the Western Conference, and saw key player acquisitions that aimed to boost the team’s performance.
