Mariners Reactivate Matt Brash: A Key Reliever Returns After Elbow Surgery

The Seattle Mariners have welcomed back reliever Matt Brash, marking his return to action after a lengthy recovery from surgery. The team is enjoying a strong season, remaining top of the AL West.

The Seattle Mariners have activated right-handed reliever Matt Brash from the injured list, allowing him to make his first big-league appearance since September 2023. This follows his recovery from Tommy John surgery and the installation of an internal brace last spring. In a corresponding move, the Mariners have demoted reliever Troy Taylor.

Brash, nearing his 27th birthday, had previously shown promise as a reliable high-leverage reliever before his injury. In 2023, he pitched 78 games with a 3.06 ERA (130 ERA+) and a 3.69 strikeout-to-walk ratio, achieving a 34.7% strikeout rate among pitchers with over 50 innings.

He participated in six games at the Triple-A level as part of his rehab assignment, where he allowed five earned runs with a 40% whiff rate on his slider.

The Mariners, currently leading the AL West with a 19-12 record, have responded well to Brash’s impending return, having recently recorded five consecutive victories.
