Caitlin Clark Returns to Iowa: WNBA Preseason Game Against Brazil

Caitlin Clark returns to her alma mater for the Indiana Fever's preseason game against Brazil at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

One of the most anticipated preseason matchups in WNBA history will occur on Sunday as Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever face off against the Brazilian national team at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, where Clark made her mark over four years.

This will mark Clark’s return to Iowa City following her graduation last year, part of a trend where WNBA teams are increasingly playing preseason games at their stars’ college venues. Clark set numerous records during her collegiate career, helping lead the Hawkeyes to consecutive national championship games.

Clark was absent from the Fever’s first preseason game—a thrilling overtime victory against the Washington Mystics due to a leg injury—but she is expected to take the court on Sunday.

What the players are saying

“I’m really excited. It should be fun. I can’t believe it’s already here,” Clark expressed during the Fever’s media day. “I haven’t been back to Iowa City much since I left a year ago. Only visited a couple of times, once for a football game and once for my jersey retirement. I’m looking forward to returning, seeing former teammates, friends, and family. They’re all excited.”

Clark also added, “I have to let everyone know that there’s no air conditioning in Carver-Hawkeye [Arena]. We usually don’t play basketball in May, so hopefully, it stays cool. I’m not sure about the humidity, but we’ll see how it goes.”

Why the game matters

While this is a preseason game and the outcome doesn’t carry weight, the Fever have added multiple key players this off-season, including new head coach Stephanie White, alongside seasoned players like DeWanna Bonner, Natasha Howard, and Sophie Cunningham, who bring vital experience and defensive prowess to the team.

With Clark’s absence in the previous game, this game offers the first look at how the revamped roster functions.

Clark’s homecoming to Iowa, where she is cherished as a local hero, is expected to be a genuine spectacle.
