Washington, D.C. to Host the NFL Draft in 2027: First Time in 86 Years

The NFL Draft will return to the nation's capital for the first time since 1940, as announced by President Trump.

For the first time in over 85 years, the NFL Draft is heading to Washington, D.C. During an announcement event held at the White House on Monday, President Donald Trump confirmed that the District of Columbia will host the 2027 draft.

This event marks the earliest instance D.C. can host, as the NFL has already designated Pittsburgh to host the 2026 Draft. The Commanders have been aiming for the 2027 draft for more than a year, and their aspiration is now a reality.

“The NFL Draft has become a marquee event, uniting fans across the country and around the world,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell stated. “We are excited to bring the 2027 draft to Washington, D.C., a city rich in history and national pride.”

Goodell and Commanders owner Josh Harris were present at the event where the NFL showcased the anticipated draft setup. D.C.’s unique setup provides an advantage, and the draft is projected to take place at the National Mall.

This marks the first time D.C. has hosted the NFL Draft since December 1940. At that time, the Chicago Bears selected Tom Harmon with the No. 1 overall pick.

Denver was previously rumored to be the only other candidate for the 2027 event.

This announcement is one of two significant measures introduced by the Commanders within a week. Just days earlier, they revealed plans for a new $3.7 billion stadium to be constructed on the former RFK stadium site, where the Commanders played from 1961 until 1996.

Once this stadium is complete, Goodell hinted at the likelihood of the Commanders hosting a Super Bowl.

With the draft expected in D.C., there’s potential for breaking the all-time attendance record, previously set in 2024 with 775,000 attendees. Goodell anticipates that as many as one million visitors could flock to the 2027 draft.
