Knicks Stage Remarkable Comeback to Defeat Celtics in Overtime Battle

The New York Knicks battled back from a significant deficit to outlast the Boston Celtics in a thrilling overtime game.

The New York Knicks managed to pull off a stunning comeback against the Boston Celtics, overcoming a 20-point deficit in the third quarter to win 108-105 in overtime during the opening game of their Eastern Conference semifinal series. The Knicks, initially struggling for most of the game, were able to perform exceptionally well in the final moments.

“We told each other just keep believing. Just keep fighting and sticking together, and keep chipping away. There wasn’t going to be a 20-point shot,” said Jalen Brunson.

Brunson scored 20 of his total 29 points in the second half, while OG Anunoby added 23 points after halftime. Although Mikal Bridges only managed eight points, he significantly contributed by playing 51 minutes and securing three steals alongside two blocks. Bridges also nailed a crucial three-pointer in overtime, aided by a rebound from Karl-Anthony Towns, who then tipped in a missed shot by Brunson with 1:47 left in OT, establishing a 108-102 lead for the Knicks.

They held onto the lead thereafter, leaning on a strong defense that allowed just 33 points in the last 25 minutes of the match.

In fierce competition, the Celtics previously led 72-52 with under a minute left in the third quarter, but the Knicks finished strong, cutting the lead to 11 points. They even managed to tie the game at 86 during the fourth quarter. Both teams exchanged leads, and with mere seconds remaining in regulation, Jayson Tatum missed a crucial shot, allowing the Knicks to carry their energy into overtime.

Despite Boston’s rough shooting night with a record 45 missed three-pointers, the Celtics’ Jrue Holiday returned to play, scoring 16 points. However, center Kristaps Porzingis only played 13 minutes before illness sidelined him for the remainder of the game.

“Obviously, it impacts the game with his ability on both ends of the floor,” said Coach Mazzulla regarding Porzingis. “It’s no excuse. We had plenty of opportunities… Hopefully he’s ready for Game 2.”

The next game is scheduled for Wednesday at TD Garden, as the series shifts to New York for Games 3 and 4.
