Watch the U.S. Open Cup: Round of 32 Preview for MLS Teams Against Lower League Rivals

The U.S. Open Cup is set to resume with 16 MLS clubs entering the tournament against lower league opponents in the knockout stage.

The U.S. Open Cup is back this Tuesday and Wednesday with the round of 32, marking the debut of MLS teams as they compete against clubs from lower divisions.

This week’s matches feature 16 MLS teams, including notable past winners such as the Chicago Fire, alongside recent champions like the Houston Dynamo and Orlando City. These MLS sides will challenge lower league teams, including representatives from the USL Championship, US League One, and one MLS Next Pro team. Several matchups will be regional, with intrastate games, such as North Carolina FC facing Charlotte FC and Austin FC battling El Paso Locomotive.

CBS Sports will broadcast all 16 matches in this round, available on CBS Sports Network, Paramount+, and CBS Sports Golazo Network. In-studio coverage will occur on both days, while The Golazo Show will highlight goals and top plays available on Wednesday for the 11 matches scheduled.

  1. San Jose Earthquakes, Sacramento Republic Face Off
In one of the most anticipated matchups, the Sacramento Republic will visit the San Jose Earthquakes, coached by former U.S. men’s national team coach Bruce Arena. The Republic seeks to replicate their memorable run to the finals from three years ago, overcoming teams like the Earthquakes and LA Galaxy along the way.

  2. Expect Lopsided Matchups
While numerous games will pit MLS clubs against USL Championship teams, certain teams from the third tier have qualified for this round. Clubs like AV Alta FC, Chattanooga Red Wolves, and Union Omaha will vie for upsets against their more affluent MLS rivals.
