David Beckham Shares How He Almost Joined Barcelona Instead of Real Madrid

David Beckham discusses how he was initially set to move to Barcelona before his iconic transfer to Real Madrid in 2003 during a live watchalong.

While Inter faced Barcelona in the Champions League semifinals, David Beckham shared stories about his notable transfer to Real Madrid in 2003. During the live watchalong on Paramount+, he revealed that he was originally meant to join Barcelona.

In his own words, Beckham stated:

“When the call came that I was sold from Manchester United, I was told I was headed to Barcelona. But my dream was to play for Real Madrid. I made it clear that if I was moving to Spain, it had to be to Madrid.”

This decisive conversation led to his transfer to Madrid, highlighting the significant moment for both the player and English soccer.

At Real Madrid, Beckham would go on to score 20 goals in 158 matches and win both La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup during his time there. His involvement in English football included competing in the 2004 European Championship and the 2006 World Cup.
