Steve Sarkisian Supports Quinn Ewers' Choice to Enter NFL Draft: 'He Gave His All to Texas'
Texas coach Steve Sarkisian praises quarterback Quinn Ewers for his decision to join the NFL Draft instead of remaining in college football, defending Ewers against criticism.
Quinn Ewers’ decision to leave college football behind and enter the 2025 NFL Draft drew skepticism from some who thought he should have opted for the NCAA Transfer Portal. Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian had pointed remarks for these critics during an appearance on Josh Pate’s College Football Show.
After the 2024 season, in which Ewers guided Texas to the College Football Playoff Semifinal, he had several options. He chose not to stay at Texas, competing with Arch Manning for the starting position, and picked the NFL Draft instead of entering the transfer portal for lucrative NIL opportunities.
Following Ewers’ selection by the Miami Dolphins in the seventh round, some questioned his choice. Sarkisian expressed his support, emphasizing Ewers’ decision reflects a rare commitment to his legacy at Texas, stating:
“Everybody has got a comment about a kid who leaves a school and goes to another school for more money… Here’s Quinn Ewers, who decided not to go to another school. He says, ‘You know what? I’ve left a legacy at the University of Texas. I’m gonna go chase my dreams and fulfill my dreams of playing in the NFL.’ Now those same critics are saying, ‘How could he not go take that money?'”
Ultimately, Sarkisian believes Ewers and other players are doing what is right for their future, affirming:
“Who are we to judge and criticize a young man who’s making a decision about his future?… To criticize him for not taking the money. What are we talking about?”
Sarkisian highlighted Ewers’ dedication to Texas, stating:
“He gave everything he could to our program and decided, ‘You know what? Now’s my time. It’s time for me to go on the next journey of life.’”
After transferring from Ohio State, Ewers significantly contributed to the Texas program under Sarkisian, completing 64.9% of his passes for 9,128 yards and 68 touchdowns over three seasons, helping the Longhorns clinch two College Football Playoff berths.
