Chet Lemon, World Series Champion of 1984, Passes Away at 70: Remembered as a Kind Soul

Chet Lemon, a pivotal figure in the 1984 Tigers World Series victory, has passed away. Tributes highlight his impact on and off the field.

Chet Lemon, a key player in the 1984 Detroit Tigers World Series championship, has passed away at 70. The Tigers released a statement expressing their sadness:

“The Detroit Tigers join all of baseball in mourning the passing of Chet Lemon. While he was a World Series Champion and All-Star on the field, perhaps his biggest impact came off of it. That includes creating the Chet Lemon Foundation and dedicating much of his post-playing career to youth baseball development.”

The foundation established in 2021 aims to raise awareness about stroke and aphasia, supporting those affected while continuing Lemon’s legacy in youth sports. Lemon’s health had been declining, leading to numerous hospitalizations due to health issues that left him unable to walk or talk.

Chet Lemon, originally selected in the first round by the Chicago White Sox, spent 16 seasons with both the White Sox and Tigers. He recorded an impressive OPS+ of 121, hitting 215 home runs and earning three All-Star selections. His most notable achievement was during the 1984 season, contributing significantly to the Tigers’ remarkable performance.

Alan Trammell shared heartfelt condolences:
“My heart goes out to [his wife] Gigi and the family. Chet was a cherished teammate and friend. I’m so thankful for the time we spent together. Today is a sad day for us. He will be dearly missed.”
Lance Parrish remembered him fondly as “the kindest of men” and a fierce competitor on the field.
