Canadian Teams Aim to Conquer 32-Year Wait for the Stanley Cup

Three Canadian teams have a chance to win the Stanley Cup, ending a long drought as they progress through the playoffs.

Canadian fans have shown remarkable patience waiting for the Stanley Cup to return home. How much longer will they wait? Perhaps not much longer, as three Canadian teams are just one step from the conference finals.

On June 9, 1993, the Montreal Canadiens celebrated after defeating the Los Angeles Kings in the finals, marking the last time a Canadian team lifted the trophy. At that time, Jurassic Park was dominating box offices, and popular shows like “Roseanne” were household favorites.

Since then, the Stanley Cup has remained within the United States for 32 consecutive years.

This year, three Canadian teams, having emerged victorious in the first round of the playoffs, are vying to put an end to this streak. The Winnipeg Jets, who claimed the Presidents’ Trophy, overcame the St. Louis Blues in a seven-game series and now face the formidable Dallas Stars.

The Toronto Maple Leafs eliminated fellow Canadian team, the Ottawa Senators, in six games and will now take on the defending champions, the Florida Panthers.

Meanwhile, the Edmonton Oilers narrowly escaped the first round after trailing 2-0 against the Los Angeles Kings, but rallied to win four consecutive games. They are set to duel with the Vegas Golden Knights in a highly anticipated matchup.

As these teams continue their playoff quests, let’s review how long it has been since each Canadian team last won the Stanley Cup:
