Joe Scally: The Unsung Hero of US Soccer in Germany

Despite other stars in the spotlight, Joe Scally shines in his Bundesliga journey, achieving milestones and showcasing his versatility.

As far as U.S. men’s national team supporters are concerned, the highlight of the 2024-25 European club season revolves around Christian Pulisic, who recently led AC Milan to victory in the Italian Super Cup, and Antonee “Jedi” Robinson, U.S. Soccer’s new Male Player of the Year, who has been exceptional for Fulham and has caught the attention of Liverpool.

While Pulisic and Robinson have received significant recognition, Joe Scally, a right-back playing in Germany, has also made remarkable strides, albeit with less fanfare.

In November, Scally reached a noteworthy milestone by becoming the fourth-youngest player in history to accumulate 100 Bundesliga appearances, joining the ranks of legends like Lothar Matthäus and Berti Vogts.

“Honestly, I think it’s often overlooked by fans,” Scally stated during a recent Zoom call with reporters. “But it’s something I’m proud of and appreciate.”

Scally has secured a starting position with Borussia Mönchengladbach for four seasons. He made his Bundesliga debut in 2021 against the renowned Bayern Munich and has maintained his spot in the lineup through various managerial changes.

“Having the trust of multiple coaches has been invaluable to me,” remarked Scally, who began his career with New York City FC. “Playing 100 matches before turning 22 boosts my confidence.”

His performances have garnered attention, particularly after stepping in for an injured Sergiño Dest throughout 2024, making him one of the standout players during last summer’s Copa América.

Entering the second half of the season on a high note, Mönchengladbach, which started slowly, has shown improvement and currently sits just three points off a Champions League spot.

Scally credits part of his successful season to Gerardo Seoane, the team’s manager, stating, “He has given me the opportunity to play in different roles, and I appreciate the trust he has placed in me.”

Versatility has proven valuable for the U.S. national team under Mauricio Pochettino, allowing Scally to compete effectively for his position.

“He has adapted his game to support the team in various ways, and it has certainly bolstered his confidence,” Robinson, a teammate, noted.

With the 2026 World Cup approaching, Scally is eager to prove himself. “Adjusting to Pochettino’s coaching style is part of the process, but having a high-caliber coach guiding us is fantastic.”

After a restful winter break, Scally is ready to face Bayern again: “Playing against them is always a thrilling experience.”

In his pursuit of recognition among U.S. fans, Scally is keenly aware that the most critical audience is those observing from the national team. “Each game feels significant, knowing someone from the national team is watching.”
