Jordin Canada of Atlanta Dream Faces Two-Week Absence After Knee Injury
Point guard Jordin Canada is set to miss at least two weeks due to a knee injury sustained during a preseason game.
Just 35 seconds into the Atlanta Dream’s first preseason game on Wednesday morning, starting point guard Jordin Canada went down with a knee injury and had to be helped off the court.
The Dream announced on Friday that after imaging, Canada has been ruled out for at least two weeks, at which point she will be re-evaluated. The team did not specify the issue, referring to it only as a “right knee injury.”
Canada was defending Jade Melbourne of the Washington Mystics and went up to contest a shot. Upon landing, Canada’s right knee buckled and she collapsed to the ground in obvious pain. Brittney Sykes quickly took a foul on the other end to stop the game.

At the dead ball, Canada’s teammates and the Dream’s medical staff rushed to her side and attended to her for several minutes before she was helped to her feet. Videos from the arena show that Canada could not put much weight on her right leg as she was taken to the locker room.

Though there was initial concern about a long-term absence for Canada, she appears to have avoided a worst-case scenario. Still, losing Canada is a blow for the new-look Dream, who are eager to refresh their roster this season with Karl Smesko as their coach and stars like Brittney Griner and Brionna Jones as key free-agent signings.
Canada, who played only 20 games last season due to a hand injury, is the only true point guard on the Dream’s roster. Her defensive skills and playmaking ability are crucial for the team as she allows others like Rhyne Howard and Allisha Gray to focus on scoring. The Dream’s previous season was marred by offensive difficulties partly due to her absence, as their offensive rating was significantly better with her on the court.
The Dream have a solitary preseason game left on May 10 against the Indiana Fever, and their regular season is set to commence on May 16 against the Mystics.
