Draymond Green Voices Frustration Over 'Angry Black Man' Stereotype

Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green expressed his displeasure with how he is portrayed on the court, particularly as an 'angry Black man'.

Golden State’s Draymond Green is set to receive a warning letter from the NBA following his fifth technical foul during the playoffs. The passionate forward vocalized his frustration over frequently being depicted as an ‘angry Black man’ during games.

Green’s comments followed a loss against the Minnesota Timberwolves, where he received a technical foul after an incident involving Naz Reid.

“I’m tired of the agenda to make me look like the angry Black man,” Green shared with reporters after the game. “I’m a very successful, educated Black man with a great family, and I’m great at basketball and great at what I do. The agenda to keep making me look like an angry Black man is crazy. I’m sick of it. It’s ridiculous.”

If he incurs two more technical fouls this playoff season, he faces an automatic one-game suspension by league rules. A warning letter is sent to players after reaching their fifth technical foul of the postseason.

“It’s part of Draymond,” said Steve Kerr, the head coach of the Warriors. “What makes him a competitor and a victor can occasionally push him too far. It’s our responsibility to help him maintain his composure.”

On Friday, the Timberwolves issued a statement regarding ongoing inquiries into fans who were taunting Green during the game, with one fan allegedly making racially insensitive remarks.

“During the fourth quarter last night’s game against the Warriors, a fan was ejected for breaching the NBA Fan Code of Conduct in an incident involving Draymond Green. Another individual, identified by nearby fans as having made racially charged comments towards Green, left before security could verify his identity. The franchise is continuing its investigation, with possible further actions pending.”

Although Green did not specifically mention the fans or their taunts after the match, the timing of the alleged remarks might clarify his comments to the media.

As the Golden State-Minnesota series continues this Saturday in San Francisco, both teams are tied at one game each.

In total, according to statistics from SportRadar, Green has received 202 technical fouls throughout his career, facing NBA disciplinary actions numerous times, including missing 16 games last season after a suspension for an incident with Jusuf Nurkic and past suspensions during crucial playoff games.
