Shedeur Sanders has worn No. 2 throughout his football career, but he will have to adopt a new jersey number in his rookie season with the Cleveland Browns. Veteran wide receiver DeAndre Carter has claimed No. 2, and Sanders jokes that he can’t afford to buy it off him.
Prior to rookie minicamp, the Browns announced that Sanders would wear No. 12 due to Carter’s prior claim on No. 2.
When asked if he planned to buy his favorite jersey number from Carter, Sanders, who was drafted in the fifth round of the NFL Draft, quipped that his signing bonus wasn’t enough for that. “My signing bonus ain’t that high right now,” he said.
At least for now, Sanders will have to take the field without his trademark No. 2, which was retired by the University of Colorado during their spring game. The other number retired that day was Travis Hunter’s No. 12.
Rookie jersey numbers have generated considerable discussion in the offseason. No. 1 overall pick Cam Ward secured Warren Moon’s previously retired No. 1 with the Tennessee Titans. Meanwhile, Lawrence Taylor declined to allow rookie Abdul Carter to wear No. 56, which he sought.
As rookie jersey assignments continue to be revealed, CBS Sports is tracking each selection for the first-round draftees.
