Pat Riley Stands Firm on Jimmy Butler Trade Decisions

Pat Riley, president of the Miami Heat, asserts he has no regrets regarding the trade of Jimmy Butler during his end-of-season press conference.

Pat Riley, president of the Miami Heat, reflects on a significant moment captured in a photograph of Jimmy Butler during Game 5 of the 2020 NBA Finals, where Butler appeared exhausted yet determined.

In his first comments following Butler’s problematic season and trade to the Golden State Warriors, Riley expressed good wishes for Butler during his annual end-of-season conference. He acknowledged that Butler’s situation greatly impacted the team, taking responsibility for the decision surrounding the trade.

“There’s no doubt that what happened with Jimmy had a tremendous impact on our team. So, the buck stops with me. I’ll take that hit if you want it,” said Riley.

Tensions had begun to surface a year prior when Butler, unable to play due to injury, suggested the Heat could have succeeded against the Celtics in the playoffs.

Riley revealed that the relationship soured after Butler made those remarks, leading to repeated suspensions and the eventual trade.

“I’m not going to apologize for saying no on a contract extension when we didn’t have to, and I don’t think I should,” Riley stated.

Moving forward, Riley believes the Heat will not simply maintain the same roster for the upcoming season, as the team has faced challenges recently, including a playoff sweep.

In light of turning 80 this year, Riley is poised to continue his work with the Heat, driven by a commitment to enhance the team’s performance.

“I just turned 80 and I’m proud of it. I feel great. I am competitive as hell,” Riley remarked, underscoring his lasting passion for the game.
