Jockey of Kentucky Derby Victor Sovereignty Fined $62,000 for Excessive Crop Use During Race
Junior Alvarado has been penalized 20% of his earnings for hitting Sovereignty with a riding crop more times than permitted.
A late surge down the closing stretch won Sovereignty the 151st Kentucky Derby, as he outran the morning line favorite Journalism to the finish line. However, this strong finish came at a cost for jockey Junior Alvarado.
On Friday, the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority issued a $62,000 fine to Alvarado for excessive use of his riding crop, as he struck the horse eight times during the race—two more than allowed per HISA regulations. This violation will not affect the race results.
Typically, fines for violations are 10% of the jockey’s winnings, which totaled $310,000 at the Kentucky Derby. However, as this was Alvarado’s second violation of the crop regulation in six months, the penalty was raised to 20%. The funds collected from these fines support a jockey mental health program, receiving a $62,000 injection due to this incident during the Derby.
Sovereignty will not compete in the Triple Crown as he is not scheduled to run in the forthcoming Preakness Stakes but is expected to return for the Belmont. This decision ensures Justify remains the latest Triple Crown champion, a title earned in 2018, and provides opportunities for other horses at the Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore.
