Which NBA Teams Should Target Cooper Flagg in the Lottery?

An analysis of the NBA lottery teams that would greatly benefit from acquiring top prospect Cooper Flagg.

The upcoming NBA lottery will decide which franchise secures the top overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, and it seems certain that Cooper Flagg, formerly of Duke University, will be that selection. Flagg had an impressive NCAA season averaging 19.2 points and 7.5 rebounds, while maintaining a 48.1% shooting rate. He is notably the fifth freshman to receive the Naismith Player of the Year award, leading the Blue Devils to the Final Four.

Standing at 6-foot-9, Flagg showcases an ability to excel offensively while also being a reliable on-ball defender. His talent makes him an outstanding fit for any team that wins the lottery, though some teams require his skills more urgently than others.

Teams Needing Flagg the Most

  1. Dallas Mavericks
The Mavericks have a slim 1.8% chance of getting the No. 1 pick but would greatly benefit from Flagg’s addition. He could reinvigorate the organization after the trade of Luka Dončić, serving as a perfect fit for general manager Nico Harrison’s motto: ‘defense wins championships’. Flagg could seamlessly integrate with both Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving.

  2. Charlotte Hornets
While their need isn’t as critical, the Hornets could benefit significantly by pairing Flagg with LaMelo Ball and Brandon Miller. Ball’s elite passing would enhance Flagg’s athleticism, and his presence could bolster the Hornets’ defensive capabilities.

  3. Washington Wizards
After an 18-64 record, the Wizards possess promising youngsters but could elevate their game by selecting Flagg. Combining him with their first-rounders could position them as strong contenders in the Eastern Conference.

  4. Utah Jazz
With current veterans like Lauri Markkanen and Collin Sexton, adding Flagg would provide them a foundational piece to build on for future playoff aspirations.

  5. Brooklyn Nets
Struggling since trading Kevin Durant, the Nets are in dire need of a franchise cornerstone, and Flagg fits that bill perfectly. Notably, he would appreciate remaining close to his family in Maine if he stays on the East Coast.
