Top 5 Considerations for NBA Draft Lottery Day

Excitement builds as the NBA Draft lottery approaches, setting the stage for the key draft picks.

The NBA Draft lottery is scheduled for Monday, setting the draft order for the top 14 teams before the first round on June 25.

The lottery is an event filled with anticipation, as teams’ draft positions are determined by the result of lottery balls. The three teams with the worst records from last season—the Charlotte Hornets, Utah Jazz, and Washington Wizards—have the highest chance (14%) of securing the first overall pick. However, outcomes can be unpredictable. For instance, in 2024, the Atlanta Hawks, with only a 3.7% chance, managed to pull off a surprise and select Zaccharie Risacher.

This draft season, former Duke forward Cooper Flagg is the star attraction, generating significant buzz among fans from non-playoff teams and NBA enthusiasts alike. Here are five key points to monitor during the NBA Draft lottery:

1. Uncertainty Beyond Flagg

Whether Dylan Harper, anticipated to be the second overall prospect in the 2025 NBA Draft, will be picked second remains unclear. If the Wizards secure the No. 2 pick for a second consecutive year, Harper would be a solid fit for their roster filled with young talent like Carlton “Bub” Carrington, Kyshawn George, and Alex Sarr.

2. Philadelphia’s Draft Dilemma

At the start of the 2024-25 NBA season, the Philadelphia 76ers aimed high, but their season didn’t unfold as planned. With Joel Embiid sidelined for most of the year and Paul George struggling, the 76ers fell into the lottery. If they don’t retain their first-round pick within the top six, it will go to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

3. Spurs’ Odds for Flagg

The San Antonio Spurs have a 6% chance of clinching the top pick, which could potentially see them pair Flagg with talents like Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle.

4. Best Fit for Flagg?

Among the teams that could secure the first overall pick, the Hornets make the most sense for Flagg given their existing roster. His athletic capabilities would complement LaMelo Ball perfectly.

5. Suns on the Edge

For Suns fans, the lottery might bring more anxiety. With Houston Rockets acquiring their first-round pick as part of the deal that brought Kevin Durant to Phoenix, there is not much for them to be excited about this Monday.
