NWSL Players Association Calls for Updated Postponement Policies Following Medical Incident

The NWSL Players Association has urged the league to revise its game postponement protocols following a serious health emergency involving Savy King during a recent match.

The NWSL Players Association has called for the league to update its policy concerning game postponements in light of a serious medical situation that occurred during Angel City FC’s victory over the Utah Royals. Defender Savy King was taken off the field mid-game after undergoing surgery for a heart abnormality.

“These moments demand humanity, sound judgment, and restraint,” a statement from the players association read. “Any medical emergency that requires life-saving care should bring play to an end. The match should not have continued. Our members are elite, world-class competitors who can perform under unimaginable conditions, but that does not mean they should have to.”

Despite the competent medical response on-site, the players’ association criticized the decision to continue the match, emphasizing that incidents of such severity should automatically trigger a suspension of play. King collapsed in the 74th minute and received medical attention for approximately 10 minutes before being substituted.

Following her medical episode, King was taken to the hospital, where she successfully underwent surgery. Angel City FC provided updates indicating that her prognosis is excellent.

“Savy King was admitted to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center after receiving immediate care at California Hospital Medical Center, and doctors discovered a heart abnormality,” the club stated.

King’s family expressed gratitude for the swift actions of the medical staff and the support from fans and the community during her recovery. They expressed their appreciation for the kindness shown during this challenging time, emphasizing the importance of support and love in moments like this.

The incident has raised questions about the NWSL’s protocols regarding medical emergencies, as the game resumed after King’s substitution. The league maintains that policies are in place for postponements due to serious incidents, yet many believe the current rules need reevaluation.

“Player safety is paramount to the NWSL,” stated the league. “The seriousness of this incident requires a deliberate process that is careful and methodical. This process is underway and will focus on ensuring the safety of players, staff, and fans. Please respect Savy’s privacy during this time.”
