NWSL Players Association Advocates for Clear Rules on Match Interruptions After Savy King Incident
The NWSL Players Association insists on a strong policy change regarding match suspensions following medical emergencies, highlighting a recent incident involving player Savy King.
The NWSL Players Association is advocating for the implementation of a ‘bright-line rule’ concerning match day operations in light of the recent medical incident involving Angel City FC defender Savy King. The 20-year-old center back collapsed during a match against the Utah Royals and subsequently underwent successful heart surgery, as confirmed in an official club statement.
This incident occurred in the 78th minute of the match and, despite King’s collapse, the game continued without delay, prompting criticism of the league’s decision-making in emergencies. An initial statement from the NWSL expressed concern and gratitude to the paramedics for their prompt response, but did not directly address the failure to pause the game.
NWSL sources indicate that policy changes are forthcoming, as the Players Association has urged a reevaluation of the league’s procedures for postponing matches. In an interview with the Attacking Third podcast, Meghann Burke, the executive director of the NWSLPA, emphasized the need for clear and decisive rules that prioritize player safety in emergency situations.
Burke stated, “We’re human beings, and this is a simple matter of humanity. We’re seeking clarity in decision-making processes during life-threatening situations.”
Reflecting on the weight of King’s experience, Burke and the association hope to mitigate similar risks for future players by establishing unambiguous guidelines regarding when to halt a match for medical emergencies. This demand follows a pattern in professional sports, as evidenced by similar incidents involving Damar Hamlin and Christian Eriksen, both of whom experienced cardiac events during games, leading to varying responses from their respective leagues.
In Burke’s conclusion, she asserted that the ongoing discussions within the league need to consistently focus on safeguarding athletes, stating, “The health and well-being of everyone connected to the NWSL is our utmost priority. Any similar future incidents should compel an immediate game cessation.”
