Juan Soto's Playful Acknowledgment of Booing Fans in His Bronx Return

In his first game at Yankee Stadium since joining the Mets, Juan Soto faced boos from fans but played it cool, engaging with them amidst a Yankees victory.

On Friday night, Juan Soto made his much-anticipated return to Yankee Stadium as a member of the Mets. He left the Yankees, having previously aided them in reaching the World Series last year, to sign a record contract worth $765 million. The Yankees secured a 6-2 victory in this Subway Series opener. How would the crowd react to Soto? Check it out for yourself:

Soto attempted to handle the pressure, ultimately working a 3-0 count against Yankees pitcher Carlos Rodón before drawing a 5-pitch walk. His night included 0 for 2 with three walks, a stolen base, and a run scored, but he ended the game as the final out.

When it came time for Soto to play right field, a subset of fans turned their backs on him:

Soto had a stellar previous season with the Yankees, contributing significantly to their postseason run but ultimately chose to sign elsewhere, which drew some ire from the fans.

“It’s going to be 50,000 against 1. They’re going to try to get on me. It’s part of it,” Soto remarked earlier this week about his return. Soto, 26, came into this Subway Series with a less stellar .255/.380/.465 batting line and eight home runs, a downturn following his impressive .288/.419/.569 record last season, resulting in a third-place finish in AL MVP voting.

Both teams opened the series at the top of their divisions with the Mets standing at 28-17 and the Yankees at 26-18.
