In her debut with the Indiana Fever, DeWanna Bonner etched her name into WNBA history by becoming the third all-time leading scorer during a commanding 93-58 victory against the Chicago Sky. Scoring seven points in total, Bonner increased her career tally to 7,482 points, trailing behind Diana Taurasi (10,646) and Tina Charles (7,696).
Bonner’s historic moment occurred with just over three minutes left in the game when she made two free throws, prompting a standing ovation from the crowd at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
“I think I’m just grateful. Most people don’t get up there,” Bonner said. “That’s really hard to do. It’s really hard to be in that position and to be in the league this long… I just try to soak in the moment.”
Stephanie White, the Fever’s coach, praised Bonner, stating she deserves recognition for her consistent presence in the league while also highlighting her humility.
Bonner’s teammates were eager to see her achieve this milestone, with Caitlin Clark, who also made headlines with her triple-double achievement, advocating for Bonner during the game. “DB is somebody that is a Hall of Famer, a legend,” said Clark. “Not only a good basketball player – a great person, a great leader.”
As Bonner aspires for another championship in her 15th season, the Fever, buoyed by this win, aim to position themselves as one of the league’s top teams.
