Investigation Launched Into Alleged Fan Misconduct During WNBA Game Featuring Fever and Sky

The WNBA is looking into reports of hateful comments directed at players during the opening weekend game.

The WNBA has begun investigating reports of alleged hateful comments from fans at Gainbridge Fieldhouse during the Indiana Fever’s 93-58 victory over the Chicago Sky on Saturday.

The WNBA strongly condemns racism, hate, and discrimination in all forms — they have no place in our league or in society. We are aware of the allegations and are looking into the matter.

The Fever has also stated their commitment to collaborating with the league during this investigation. Mel Raines, CEO of Pacers Sports & Entertainment, mentioned:

We are aware of the allegations of inappropriate fan conduct during yesterday’s game and we are working closely with the WNBA to complete their investigation. We stand firm in our commitment to providing a safe environment for all WNBA players.

The incident occurred during the third quarter when Caitlin Clark was flagged for a foul against Angel Reese. Following this, both players received technical fouls for their involvement in a brief altercation.

After the announcement of the investigation, the WNBA players’ union expressed its support:

The WNBPA is aware of reports of hateful comments at yesterday’s game in Indianapolis and supports the WNBA’s current investigation into this matter. Such behavior is unacceptable in our sport.

Prior to the season, the WNBA initiated a “No Space For Hate” campaign aimed at promoting respect across the league and addressing rising harassment faced by players, particularly on social media.

We want our arenas, and our social platforms filled with energy and fandom — not hate and vitriol, stated Commissioner Cathy Engelbert. It’s our responsibility to protect what makes this sport so special and ensure we continue to inspire the next generation of women’s basketball fans.
