Angel City defender Savy King has been released from the hospital following successful heart surgery, marking an important moment in her recovery after experiencing a medical emergency during a match against the Utah Royals.
“Savy King was discharged from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on May 17, and is now resting comfortably with her family,” stated Angel City in a public announcement. They expressed gratitude for the exceptional medical care she received from the world-class staff at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, in collaboration with their own medical team. Angel City is committed to supporting Savy as she continues her healing journey.
King took to Instagram, sharing her first thoughts since the incident and thanking her supporters while posting pictures from her hospital stay. “I’m still finding the words to express how much your love and support have meant to me over these past few days,” she wrote. She emphasized the importance of her family, teammates, fans, and the medical team that helped her recover.
On May 9, during Angel City’s 2-0 victory over the Royals, King collapsed in the second half, prompting a medical response on the field that lasted around 10 minutes before she was taken to a local hospital. Following her surgery, discussions erupted around the handling of the game by the NWSL. Coach Jimmy Coenraets and player Trinity Rodman argued that the match should have been halted. The NWSL Players Association is now pushing for changes to the league’s policies to ensure player safety during such emergencies.
In reaction to the event, NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman stated, “The match should not have continued, and we are committed to ensuring it won’t happen again.”
As Angel City resumed play following King’s discharge, her teammates donned shirts with her initials ‘SK3’ to honor and uplift her during their match against Bay FC.
