Michael Malone Raises Questions with MVP Praise for Shai Gilgeous-Alexander

Michael Malone's comments during his analyst debut about Shai Gilgeous-Alexander spark intrigue due to his recent history with Nikola Jokić.

Michael Malone’s time at the helm of the Denver Nuggets concluded dramatically with his dismissal just before the 2025 NBA playoffs commenced. After his old team’s playoff elimination in the second round, he stepped into a new role as an ESPN analyst during the playoffs. He soon made headlines with his remarks regarding Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, labeling him as the MVP after a notable performance against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

In a recent game, Malone stated, "[Shai] showed why he’s the MVP." This comment followed the Thunder’s convincing victory, igniting discussions given Malone’s recent history with two-time MVP Nikola Jokić.

While it wasn’t an outrageous claim, Malone’s statement invites speculation, especially since Gilgeous-Alexander is touted as the frontrunner for the MVP award this season.

Moreover, Malone previously asserted that Jokić deserves the MVP title “ten times out of ten.” Both Gilgeous-Alexander and Jokić are among the top three finalists for the MVP award alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks. The announcement regarding the MVP winner is expected soon.
