Richmond Coach Accuses Maryland of Offering $50,000 to Kicker Transfer

Richmond's head coach, Russ Huesman, responds to the transfer of kicker Sean O'Haire to Maryland, alleging monetary inducement.

Richmond recently lost kicker Sean O’Haire to Maryland, and coach Russ Huesman is voicing his displeasure. He has accused Maryland of engaging in tampering to persuade O’Haire to join them after spring practice.

Huesman claimed that O’Haire had no intentions of leaving Richmond until Maryland allegedly offered him $50,000. “They came in, they tampered. The kid had zero interest in transferring; they offered him money,” Huesman stated.

O’Haire transferred to Maryland on May 3 after completing a productive freshman season with Richmond, making all 12 of his field goal attempts, including multiple 45-yard kicks.

A Kildare, Ireland native, O’Haire participated in the spring game and preserved his redshirt status, allowing him four more years of eligibility. Huesman expressed that this situation was not O’Haire’s fault but criticized Maryland and those around O’Haire. He indicated he would express his discontent directly to Maryland’s coach, Mike Locksley.

The Richmond Spiders, under Huesman, are preparing for their ninth season, having achieved consecutive conference titles and playoff appearances, while Maryland is looking to improve upon a 4-8 record under Locksley.
