Darrion Williams Joins NC State: A Key Addition as Wolfpack Aims High
Williams, a notable transfer and former star at Texas Tech, commits to NC State, enhancing their roster under coach Will Wade.
At his NC State introductory press conference, Will Wade confidently stated, “We are going to win and do it quickly.” He certainly wasn’t kidding. Wade secured his biggest transfer portal addition yet, nabbing former Texas Tech standout Darrion Williams.
Williams entered the NBA Draft after the season but withdrew his name on May 20. He was ranked as the No. 6 transfer available according to 247Sports’ transfer rankings and becomes the seventh player heading to Raleigh via the transfer portal.

Williams, who stands at 6-foot-6 and weighs 225 pounds, showed impressive growth in his scoring, raising his average from 7.6 points per game in his freshman year at Nevada to 15.1 during his last season with the Red Raiders. He also finished second on the Red Raiders in rebounds (5.5) and assists (3.6) per game, showcasing his diverse skill set.
Williams excelled during the NCAA Tournament, playing a pivotal role in leading the Red Raiders to their third Elite Eight appearance. He recorded notable scores of 13 against UNC Wilmington, 28 against Drake, and 23 in a loss to Florida.
Adam Finkelstein, 247Sports Director of Scouting, remarked:
“Williams has evolved from an undersized four-man in high school to a versatile and efficient big wing, displaying a robust understanding of the game.”
Rebuilt Roster
While Williams is the highest-ranked transfer Wade has acquired this offseason, he is among several strong additions. The Wolfpack’s transfer class also includes former Houston player Terrance Arceneaux and former Michigan State guard Tre Holloman.
This influx of talent aids in mitigating the loss of 10 former NC State players who have either transferred or are currently in the portal. Additionally, the Wolfpack are welcoming three high school recruits, led by Matt Able, ranked No. 28 in the Class of 2025.
