Boston Red Sox reliever Liam Hendriks shared on social media that he and his wife have been targets of death threats.
Hendriks made these serious allegations via an Instagram story, stating:
“Just as an FYI: Threats against me and my wife’s life are terrible and cruel. You need help. Telling me to commit suicide and that you wish I died from cancer is disgusting and vile. Maybe you should step back and re-evaluate your life’s purpose before hiding behind a screen and attacking players and their families. I think I speak for all players who have had to deal with this in their careers when I say: Enough is enough.”
Hendriks made his statement just before his team was scheduled to play the Baltimore Orioles, a game that ended up being canceled due to rain, following his previous comments on his role to Alex Speier of the Boston Globe.
The 36-year-old signed with Boston before the 2024 season but missed the entire last season due to Tommy John surgery performed in August 2023. He returned to play on April 20 of this year but has had a tough comeback, posting a 5.56 ERA along with 11 strikeouts and six walks across 11 ⅓ innings.
A three-time All-Star, Hendriks is also a cancer survivor.
As for the Red Sox, they are currently in third place in the American League East with a record of 25–26, trailing the first-place New York Yankees by six games.
