Manchester United’s dismal season took a harsh turn on Wednesday, losing the UEFA Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur. Roy Keane stated that the match showcased the “lack of quality” that has plagued the team throughout the season.
The decisive goal in the final was scored in the 42nd minute by Spurs’ Brennan Johnson, who capitalized on a defensive mistake from United. Luke Shaw’s ineffective play made it easy for Johnson, while the goalkeeper, Andre Onana, could have performed better on a rather flukey shot that ended up in the net.
“IT’S A NIGHTMARE FOR LUKE SHAW WHO TURNS IT INTO HIS OWN NET JUST BEFORE THE BREAK”

Keane articulated that the goal encapsulated the game: a real lack of quality and poor decision-making from United.
He believed Tottenham proved to be the better team, effectively utilizing a defensive strategy in the second half that further exposed United’s ongoing issues. Despite only three shots on goal during the match, Spurs outperformed United in expected goals – with Tottenham’s expected goals at 1.01 compared to United’s 0.85 from 16 attempts.
“To start the second half, they set up shop early and it was clear they were going to be defensive and did well defensively,” Keane remarked, emphasizing United’s ongoing struggles. “United are relying on Harry Maguire to save them at the end – that sums up their problem.”

Now, Manchester United shifts their focus to their upcoming match against Aston Villa, aiming to finish the Premier League season on a better note. Currently in 16th place, the team could potentially land anywhere between 14th and 17th, marking their lowest league finish since they’ve never previously ended below eighth place.
This defeat also signifies that United will not participate in the Champions League next season.
