Christian Pulisic to Miss the Summer Gold Cup

USMNT's star player Christian Pulisic will not participate in the upcoming Gold Cup due to physical fatigue after a strenuous season.

Christian Pulisic, a prominent player for the US Men’s National Team and the leading scorer for AC Milan this season, will not join the roster for the upcoming Concacaf Gold Cup. Sources report that this decision comes from contemplating his physical health after intense European seasons and international play. Coach Mauricio Pochettino is expected to announce his 26-player squad soon.

Pulisic is aiming for a new career record for minutes played as he prepares for his last match of the Serie A season against Monza, needing just 49 minutes to surpass his previous high. Despite his efforts, he won’t be part of the Gold Cup as it conflicts with his health concerns related to the crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Gold Cup will commence on June 14 across 12 cities in the U.S., and the U.S. was drawn into a group with Trinidad and Tobago, Haiti, and Saudi Arabia. The absence of Pulisic further reduces the team’s advantage, with fellow players Gio Reyna, Weston McKennie, and Tim Weah also missing the tournament due to their club commitments.

The scheduling of the Gold Cup has raised challenges, especially with the Club World Cup taking place concurrently in the U.S. The governing body has permitted participating clubs to retain their players for their respective matches.

Pochettino expressed concerns over the situation during a press conference, acknowledging the challenges faced by the U.S. team without key players.

Despite not scoring for the U.S. this year, Pulisic has been instrumental for AC Milan, tallying 17 goals and 12 assists in all competitions. The upcoming European season is critical for him and his teammates, as preparations continue for the co-hosted World Cup in 2026. Pulisic’s previous experience in the Gold Cup in 2019, where he was recognized as the best young player, adds pressure to excel in future tournaments.
