John Smoltz Discusses Braves' Slow Start, Juan Soto's Pressures, and Pete Rose's Hall of Fame Prospects

The former MLB pitcher shares insights about his golf aspirations and the current performance of the Atlanta Braves and Juan Soto.

In a recent discussion, John Smoltz, a prominent figure in baseball, expressed his thoughts on various topics related to the sport and its players.

Smoltz, renowned for his remarkable 21-season career, made the All-Star team eight times, clinched a Cy Young Award, and ultimately secured his spot in the Hall of Fame. Now serving as the lead color commentator for Fox Sports, he also remains passionate about golf, aiming to qualify for the U.S. Open and win the American Century Championship this summer.

Smoltz candidly admitted that he feels the pressure to win each year, noting, “I put too much pressure on myself because I want to win so bad.”

As he reflects on the Atlanta Braves, who started their season poorly at 0-7 before recovering, he acknowledged that the team’s experience gives them an edge in overcoming challenges: “It shocks your system when you start out 0-7… You can’t hide your warts forever. They’re gonna be there.”

Discussing Juan Soto, the four-time All-Star now with the Mets after signing a 15-year, $765 million contract, Smoltz remarked that expectations have risen drastically for players with such lucrative deals, which he believes is unfair.

Regarding Pete Rose’s reinstatement and potential Hall of Fame induction, he stated, “What he did on the field was untainted and was absolutely deserving, a no-brainer.”
