The Indianapolis Motor Speedway announced on Friday that Casey Irsay Foyt, the daughter of late Colts owner Jim Irsay, will act as the honorary starter for the upcoming 109th Indianapolis 500, waving the green flag during the event. This announcement comes two days after the passing of her father, who died at the age of 65. The Speedway plans to honor Irsay’s extensive contributions to Indianapolis and beyond during the race.
Irsay Foyt works in marketing and community relations for the Colts and is married to former IndyCar driver A.J. Foyt IV, making her a part of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway lineage as the granddaughter-in-law of the legendary A.J. Foyt, who has four Indianapolis 500 wins, tying him for the most in history.
“As Indianapolis prepares for a special weekend that showcases our city’s unmatched ability to host large global sporting events, celebrating Jim’s contributions to our city and state is meaningful,” said Mark Miles, president and CEO of Penske Entertainment. “The Indianapolis we know and love would not be possible without Jim.”
J. Douglas Boles, president of IndyCar and IMS, added, “We’re honored to have Casey on the flag stand representing her family and all Hoosiers who cherish our unique sports culture.”
In a statement, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway highlighted Irsay’s legacy, calling him “an incredibly kind, brilliant, and dedicated leader whose generosity made an irreplaceable impact on so many lives. His presence will be deeply missed.”
