Former SEC Quarterback Questions Arch Manning's Hype

The SEC's all-time passing leader, Aaron Murray, expresses skepticism about Arch Manning's early acclaim as a Heisman hopeful.

In the debate surrounding Texas quarterback Arch Manning, former Georgia signal-caller and SEC record holder Aaron Murray advised caution regarding Manning’s hype as he begins his tenure at Texas.

Murray noted, “I am not sold like many others that this kid is destined to be the top pick in the NFL Draft or a game-changing player right out of the gate. If he’s so highly rated, why isn’t he outpacing a seventh-round quarterback?”

Manning had glimpses of his potential last season, with three appearances and two starts, where he threw for 806 yards and ten touchdowns. Despite this, Murray expressed concerns about Manning’s first-round capabilities, highlighting that he was unable to secure a starting role over the Longhorns’ current quarterback, Quinn Ewers.

As we look ahead to the 2025 season, Manning is predicted to be the number one overall pick in various mock drafts and has become a favorite for the Heisman Trophy, currently listed at +700 by DraftKings sportsbook. Murray stated, “People are projecting Manning to be a top draft choice. Yet is it concerning that he can’t leapfrog the current starter?”

Manning himself is aware of the expectations, mentioning before spring practice that he hopes to gain recognition based on his performance and opportunities on the field.
