Challenges for DeWanna Bonner as She Finds Her Fit in Indiana's Fast-Paced Game

DeWanna Bonner, a prominent player for the Indiana Fever, faces difficulties in her new team's dynamic style of play, according to coach Stephanie White.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Indiana Fever recently introduced a new starting lineup against the reigning champions, New York Liberty. Notably, DeWanna Bonner, a six-time All-Star, came off the bench, scoring just two points in 23 minutes during a narrow 90-88 defeat.

Bonner, often referred to as DB, increased her notoriety by reaching third place on the league’s all-time scoring list during her debut for the Fever, although her overall scoring has been considerably low this season.

Post her move from Auburn, Bonner was part of the Phoenix Mercury roster filled with stars like Diana Taurasi and Brittney Griner. After joining the Connecticut Sun in 2020, she sought more opportunities, succeeding with a 16-point average over five seasons. In contrast, her efforts with the Fever have dropped to under three points per game.

As Bonner adapts, her coach, Stephanie White, has pointed out that the transition has not been easy. “DB probably had the toughest transition of anybody… Finding where we can get [her shots] in a fast system with dominant guards is key,” stated White.

Despite Bonner’s agility and scoring capabilities, she is still adjusting to a roster loaded with perimeter shooters like Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell.

“We have to emphasize points of action that highlight her strengths without slowing down the game. She’s a matchup problem for defenses,” White emphasized.

Historically, Bonner has been a 30% three-point shooter and 41% overall, yet she has attempted just one three-pointer in her time with the Fever. White acknowledged this is an adjustment, indicating, “Oftentimes she’s getting into the corners and not getting out of them.”

For the second time this season, Bonner’s usage percentage fell below 10%, contrasting with her performance at Connecticut last year where it never dipped below 14%.

Though struggles have surfaced early in the season, White remains optimistic about Bonner’s eventual fit, praising her leadership skills and veteran experience in the locker room, calling Bonner an invaluable presence.

Caitlin Clark, the 2024 Rookie of the Year, also commended Bonner’s leadership abilities, highlighting her role as the strongest voice in the locker room following Bonner’s notable scoring milestone.

As the Fever seeks to refine their strategy, they will look to pivot quickly within the next weeks, aiming for an exhilarating rematch against Liberty on June 14.
