DiJonai Carrington Trade: Sun Sells Guard to Wings for Jacy Sheldon and 2025 Draft Pick

The Connecticut Sun have traded DiJonai Carrington to the Dallas Wings, receiving Jacy Sheldon and the No. 8 pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft.

The Connecticut Sun have sold DiJonai Carrington and the No. 12 overall pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft to the Dallas Wings in exchange for Jacy Sheldon and the No. 8 pick, according to Rachel Galligan. Moreover, the Wings will receive rights to swap with the Sun’s 2026 second-round pick, as reported by Alex Philippou.

The previous season’s Most Improved Player, Carrington was a restricted free agent, so the Sun could have matched any offers. However, due to a significant offseason exit, it was illogical for them to keep her. Coach Stephanie White departed to the Indiana Fever, while players like Alyssa Thomas and Tyasha Harris were traded to the Phoenix Mercury, and Brionna Jones signed with the Atlanta Dream.

Acquiring Sheldon, who was the No. 5 overall pick last year and demonstrated potential in her rookie season, alongside a top-10 pick in this year’s draft, provides the Sun with young talent to aid their rebuilding efforts. After a spell of eight consecutive playoff appearances, a considerable hassle lies ahead in regaining contention.

The Wings too have seen key losses this offseason, most specifically Satou Sabally, who was traded to the Mercury, in a three-team deal that returned Harris, NaLyssa Smith, and Mikiah Herbert Harrigan, in addition to the No. 8 pick they shipped off to the Sun. Natasha Howard has also joined the Fever as a free agent.

Unlike the Sun, the Wings are not opted for a complete overhaul. With Arike Ogunbowale still on the roster, new GM Curt Miller has attempted to rejuvenate the lineup efficiently. Players like Smith and Harris can make an immediate impact, as can Carrington, who will significantly enhance their lacking perimeter defense. The Wings also possess the No. 1 pick in the upcoming draft and are anticipated to select UConn star Paige Bueckers.

While the Wings may not contend during this season, they could be a playoff contender after last-season’s absence. They at least have a stable foundation to develop, which seemed uncertain at winter’s outset.
