USA Hockey celebrated a monumental victory by winning its first gold medal at the IIHF World Championship in 92 years on Sunday in Stockholm, Sweden. The team defeated Switzerland with a score of 1-0, thanks to a golden goal scored in overtime by Tage Thompson, a current player for the Buffalo Sabres. The decisive moment came just two minutes into overtime when Thompson fired a wrist shot that beat Swiss goalie Leonardo Genoni. Assists were credited to Logan Cooley and Brady Skjei.

This victory marked Team USA’s first world championship win since 1933. The team had faced challenges in past years, having not made it to the finals since 1934 but achieving consistent progress with four bronze medals in the last 12 years.
After their victory, the team honored the late Johnny Gaudreau by posing with his jersey. Gaudreau tragically passed away last August in an accident.

Leading up to the final, USA had a dominant performance, scoring 45 goals while allowing only 20 in 11 games, showcasing their talent and chemistry. This achievement not only ends a long gold medal drought but also signifies USA Hockey’s return to elite status in international competition.
