
More than 40 individuals, including four children, sustained injuries when a vehicle veered into a crowd of pedestrians during Liverpool FC’s Premier League trophy celebration in Liverpool on Monday. According to the police, a 53-year-old man has been arrested for the incident. Sky News reports that the North West Ambulance Service transported 27 people to four local hospitals, with two in critical condition. Additionally, 20 others received treatment for less severe injuries, which included one child with serious injuries.
Numerous emergency vehicles arrived approximately at 6 PM local time, but the site was cleared by around 10:30 PM. Sky News reported that fans filled the city’s streets to celebrate Liverpool’s triumphant season.
The trophy procession kicked off around 2:30 PM and was anticipated to last four hours, drawing hundreds of thousands within a ten-mile radius. Liverpool lies just over 200 miles northwest of London.
“We are responding to reports of a road traffic collision in Liverpool city center. We were alerted shortly after 6 PM today, Mon 26 May, regarding a vehicle impacting a group of pedestrians on Water Street. The driver remained at the scene and was detained,” stated the Merseyside Police on X.
The North West Ambulance Service confirmed their support for other first responders at the location. “NWAS is assisting at an incident in Liverpool city center following reports of a road traffic collision. We are evaluating the situation and collaborating with other emergency personnel. Our foremost priority is to ensure prompt medical attention for all affected,” they shared in a statement.
The inquiry is underway by Merseyside Police, with help from Counter Terrorism Policing North West as indicated by PA Media. Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed concern, stating that “the scenes in Liverpool are appalling — my thoughts are with all those injured or affected,” according to Liverpool Echo.
