Russell Westbrook to Undergo Surgery for Hand Injuries

Denver Nuggets' guard Russell Westbrook announces surgery to repair fractures in his hand sustained during the NBA season.

Russell Westbrook has revealed through his newsletter that he will undergo surgery on Tuesday to address fractures in his right hand, injuries he sustained during the 2024-2025 NBA season.

The point guard of the Denver Nuggets mentioned in his recent newsletter, “I’m undergoing surgery on my right hand to fix two breaks that happened during the season. I’m thankful for everyone’s support and can’t wait to return at full strength soon. The comeback is already beginning. #WhyNot.”

Details remain unclear regarding the nature and timing of the fractures. Westbrook participated in 75 regular season games and 13 playoff matches for the Nuggets last season. Notably, he was listed as “probable” on the injury report ahead of Game 7 against the Oklahoma City Thunder due to a right hand sprain. Despite this, he played 22 minutes, scoring 6 points, while the Nuggets faced a 125-93 defeat.

Unlike his past hand injuries, Westbrook managed to continue playing through this one. He previously suffered a right hand fracture in 2014 while with the Oklahoma City Thunder, resulting in a 14-game absence. In 2024, he had a left hand fracture that required surgery and caused him to miss 12 games.

This season, he averaged 13.3 points per game with nearly 52% shooting on 2-pointers and 32% from beyond the arc. However, his performance dipped in the playoffs, contributing just 26 points in the final five matchups against the Thunder.
