The Pittsburgh Steelers have reportedly been in talks with the Miami Dolphins regarding tight end Jonnu Smith. This initiative comes as the Steelers aim to bolster their receiving corps, especially after trading George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys earlier in the month.
Smith, who was the franchise’s sole Pro Bowler last year, has reportedly engaged in discussions with the Dolphins to renegotiate his contract worth $4.8 million this season. He is currently in the last year of a two-year, $8.4 million contract he signed in March 2024, and he favors a revision to his current deal in Miami.
Given Smith’s previous work with Pittsburgh’s offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, who coached him during his tenure with the Titans and Falcons, the trade interest seems logical. Under their collaboration, Smith enjoyed a career year in 2020 with eight touchdowns, and in his last season with the Falcons, he reached new career highs with 50 receptions and 582 yards.
Last season, Smith had an impressive outing with 88 catches on 111 targets for 884 yards and eight touchdowns, establishing new franchise records for tight ends.
While the Steelers have Pat Freiermuth in their starting lineup, Smith would likely fit well into offensive schemes led by Arthur Smith, known for his tight end-centric approach. Thus, if a deal with the Steelers is finalized, it would add yet another significant addition to the team this offseason, which has already seen the arrivals of Pro Bowl receiver DK Metcalf and rookie running back Kaleb Johnson.
Furthermore, the Steelers aim to acquire Aaron Rodgers, who remains available as the team completes the first week of their OTAs.
