Reigning UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones has expressed uncertainty regarding his future in mixed martial arts (MMA) and has not confirmed plans for a return to the Octagon or his potential retirement. This uncertainty arises as over 130,000 individuals have signed a petition calling for him to be stripped of his title due to perceived lack of intention to fight soon.
UFC CEO Dana White has maintained that Jones is expected to face interim champion Tom Aspinall later this year, but no official bout has been scheduled. Jones last fought in November when he triumphed over Stipe Miocic to retain his championship.
“I don’t know what life holds as far as fighting and competing,” Jones remarked. “I feel like I’ll always be a martial artist, whether I’m coaching or participating in exhibition matches. There’s still great competition in the UFC. I see myself as more than a fighter, with numerous options available to me that allow me to take breaks and return whenever I choose.”
Fans are increasingly frustrated as they eagerly await the long-anticipated title fight between Jones and Aspinall; this matchup has been about 18 months in the making since Aspinall claimed the interim title.
Aspinall became the fourth fighter in UFC history to defend an interim championship title last year and has not fought since July 2024, pending his opportunity against Jones to solidify his status as the undisputed champion. “Right now, I’m focusing on love, happiness, and kindness,” Jones stated. “As we reach a milestone age, I want to embrace more opportunities, travel, and focus on positivity and family.”
With an extensive record of achievements in the UFC across various weight classes, Jones is often regarded as the greatest mixed martial artist ever. His career has faced interruptions due to legal troubles and controversies leading to suspensions and the vacating of multiple titles, but he remains a distinguished fighter with 28 victories and only one defeat in his professional record.
