College Player Jamarion Brown Fatally Shot at Pool Party

A tragic incident has led to the death of Henderson State basketball junior Jamarion Brown, who was shot at a pool party in Texas.

A 17-year-old has been taken into custody and charged with murder following the tragic shooting of Henderson State basketball player Jamarion Brown, who was shot in the head during a pool party in east Texas. The incident occurred on Friday, leading to Brown’s critical injury and subsequent death at a local hospital.

The shooter, Onterrian Jamour Newton, remains incarcerated at the Camp County Jail awaiting bond.

Authorities responded to multiple emergency calls about the shooting. Although a medical helicopter was sent, Brown’s condition mandated he be initially taken to a local hospital before being transferred to a larger facility in Tyler, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Two others were also shot – one suffered a leg injury while the other was hit in the hip, but neither were life-threatening. Additional charges for these shootings are anticipated.

“It is with deep sadness that Henderson State Athletics mourns the death of junior men’s basketball student-athlete Jamarion Brown. ‘Jo’ spent just one season in Arkadelphia, but his impact was profound.”

Brown played in 30 games and started 19 during the 2024-25 NCAA Division II season, averaging 6.5 points, 3.6 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 1.2 steals per game. Previously, he played at Southwestern Christian College in Terrell, Texas.

“No words can express our sadness for Jamarion’s family, friends, and teammates,” stated Henderson State basketball coach Jimmy Elgas. “Jo’s impact was felt not only on the court but throughout our university community. We grieve together, and his memory will be honored forever.”
