Why Landry Shamet Deserves More Trust from Thibodeau in Eastern Conference Finals

Landry Shamet demonstrated his value in a recent Knicks victory, showcasing defensive prowess and the ability to contribute offensively, urging Coach Thibodeau to utilize his bench more effectively.

There was 9:30 left in the fourth quarter in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals when the loud Madison Square Garden crowd began chanting “Landry Shamet” as the New York Knicks held a 17-point lead against the Indiana Pacers. Shamet just forced a turnover by the Pacers after effectively guarding TJ McConnell as he attempted to create an offensive play.

Shamet executed a perfect recovery, blocking McConnell’s attempt to shoot, which led to a turnover out of bounds for Indiana. He received thunderous applause from the crowd.

“I love New York, I love these fans,” Shamet shared, commenting on the home crowd’s support. “I’ve seen how they ride the wave with us—the highs and the lows. I just want to give everything I’ve got to them. I appreciate it, but we have more to do.”

Shamet’s performance exemplified his importance during the Knicks’ decisive 111-94 victory. He played 14 minutes in this playoff game, his longest stint so far, contributing five points, one rebound, and one steal.

Previously, the Knicks struggled to manage the physicality of the Pacers but turned that around significantly in Game 5, with Shamet asserting his defensive capabilities from the get-go. His presence pushed the Pacers to struggle offensively, even against strong players like Pascal Siakam.

Later, his defensive pressure on Bennedict Mathurin nearly caused a turnover, showcasing his readiness and skill on the court.

As Karl-Anthony Towns mentioned, “It speaks volumes about the professionalism that [Landry Shamet] and [Delon Wright] have to be ready for every moment. This series has highlighted their skills, and I hope everyone notices it.”

Under Coach Tom Thibodeau, the Knicks have a reputation for maintaining a tight rotation, often leading to discussions about his reliance on the starting lineup over bench contributions. Historically, this has plagued the Knicks during playoffs, especially against deep teams like the Pacers. However, Thibodeau’s recent confidence in players like Shamet and Wright suggests a shift in strategy that could prove beneficial moving forward.

Shamet not only defended well but also made crucial shots, including a momentum-shifting three-pointer, supporting an 8-0 scoring run to extend the Knicks’ lead.

As Shamet’s three-point shooting caliber continues to shine, this newfound trust from Thibodeau could very well mean he plays an even bigger role in Game 6.
