The Kansas City Royals are promoting top prospect Jac Caglianone to the majors, according to ESPN. Caglianone, the No. 6 pick in last summer’s draft, could make his big-league debut as soon as Tuesday, when the Royals face the St. Louis Cardinals.
Caglianone, 22, has posted a batting line of .322/.389/.593 with 15 home runs across Double- and Triple-A this season. His recent promotion to Triple-A has seen him bat .319/.370/.723 with six home runs in just 12 games. CBS Sports previously detailed Caglianone’s season:
Caglianone was the most interesting player in last year’s draft class – not only because of his two-way talent (though he has yet to pitch professionally and it’s uncertain if he will) but also due to a polarizing offensive skill set. His supporters point to his elite strength and bat control as reasons for his high selection.
So far, those betting on him appear to be right, with five homers in his first six Triple-A games. However, there remains a question whether his aggressive swing will translate effectively at the major league level.
As the Royals enter Sunday with no active outfielders showing average offensive production, Caglianone is expected to play mostly in the outfield. His promotion comes at a crucial time for a struggling Royals squad currently sitting fourth in the AL Central.
Caglianone should join the Royals in time for Tuesday’s game.
