Michigan State Set to Appoint J Batt from Georgia Tech as Athletic Director
J Batt, currently the athletic director at Georgia Tech, is expected to take over as athletic director at Michigan State.
J Batt is anticipated to transition from his role as athletic director at Georgia Tech to a similar position at Michigan State, as reported by ESPN’s Pete Thamel. Batt has held the athletic director position at Georgia Tech since 2022, and his experience also includes serving as associate AD at East Carolina from 2013 to 2017 and as deputy athletic director at Alabama from 2017 to 2022.
Batt is expected to replace former MSU AD Alan Haller, who was let go last month. During the interim, Michigan State basketball coach Tom Izzo and deputy athletic director Jennifer Smith took on the duties of co-interim athletic directors.
“This is a pivotal time for college athletics, where innovation, effective communications, and community engagement are more important than ever,” said Michigan State University president Kevin M. Guskiewicz in a statement last month. “Our next athletic director will lead one of the nation’s more storied athletic programs, home to 23 varsity sports, a passionate fan base, a long legacy of academic and athletic excellence, and, most importantly, an ambitious future.”
At Georgia Tech, Batt was influential in hiring football coach Brent Key and basketball coach Damon Stoudamire, overseeing improved performances, including back-to-back seasons of at least seven wins for the football program for the first time since the early 2010s.
As Batt prepares for his transition to East Lansing, Georgia Tech will initiate its search for a new athletic director for the fourth time since 2012.
