Eagles Trade Bryce Huff to 49ers: Analyzing the Impact on Both Teams

Bryce Huff is traded from the Eagles to the 49ers, reuniting with former coach Robert Saleh. Explore how this trade affects both teams.

The Philadelphia Eagles and the San Francisco 49ers have finalized a trade sending pass rusher Bryce Huff to the 49ers for a conditional fifth-round pick in 2026, which could upgrade to a fourth rounder based on Huff’s performance, as reported by CBS Sports NFL insider Jonathan Jones. The trade is pending a physical.

Rumors of this trade began on May 30 but were delayed until after June 1. Both sides were eager to finalize the deal, with Huff restructuring his contract to facilitate the move.

At 27, Huff reunites with 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, his former coach with the New York Jets from 2021-23. He joins linebacker Chazz Surratt and punter Thomas Morstead who also transferred from the Jets in recent days.

Once an undrafted rookie, Huff had a breakout 2023 season, tallying a career-best 10 sacks without starting a game.

Huff completed one year with the Eagles after signing a three-year, $51.1 million contract last offseason. He was aiming for more this year but faced challenges including an injury that sidelined him for five games. He was also inactive during Philadelphia’s Super Bowl victory over the Kansas City Chiefs.

In his new role at the 49ers, Huff joins a restructured defense with at least four new starters, still retaining all-star pass rusher Nick Bosa and linebacker Fred Warner, the highest-paid off-ball linebacker in NFL history.

Eagles: B-

Despite Howie Roseman’s reputation, no GM has a flawless record. He took a risk signing Huff, which didn’t yield the anticipated rewards, leading the Eagles to opt for a trade instead of waiting for better results. They will still incur $9.05 million in salary but will receive a mid-round pick while the 49ers will absorb the remaining $7.95 million.

49ers: A-

This trade reflects Mike Tomlin’s idea that one person’s discard is another’s gain. The 49ers view Huff as potentially impactful, particularly given Saleh’s prior experience with him, suggesting that Huff’s integration into their system may be seamless.

In Huff’s breakout 2023 season, he achieved the highest pass-rush rate (21.8%) in the NFL, leading to significant interest in him in both Philadelphia and now San Francisco.
