As the Pittsburgh Steelers continue to await the decision of Aaron Rodgers regarding his future with the team, they have a backup plan in motion should the four-time NFL MVP decide to go elsewhere.
Steelers beat writer Gerry Dulac from the Post Gazette has reported that if Rodgers does not sign, the team plans to pursue a different veteran quarterback to strengthen their roster. Dulac stated, “I believe and have been told that if it’s not Aaron Rodgers, that we’ll find a veteran quarterback to back up Mason Rudolph.”
Despite the optimism that Rodgers might still join the Steelers, potential alternatives are disappearing, as several suitable candidates have already signed with other teams. Rudolph remains focused on improving during offseason training sessions, integrating himself with rookie Will Howard and offseason acquisition Skylar Thompson. In previous comments, Rudolph indicated he is not deterred by outside rumors and is committed to maximizing his performance in the spring.
Furthermore, discussions around possible alternatives like Kirk Cousins have emerged. Recent reports indicate that Cousins could be targeted in a trading scenario if the Steelers decide to move away from waiting on Rodgers. “If Cousins becomes available, he would certainly fulfill the veteran backup role the Steelers need,” strategists are noting. The list of quarterbacks who remain available on the free-agent market includes Ryan Tannehill, Carson Wentz, Tyler Huntley, and Desmond Ridder, among others.
Overall, as training camp approaches, the Steelers must weigh all potential options to align their roster for the upcoming season.
