The Seattle Seahawks have officially named Sam Darnold their new starting quarterback after signing him to a three-year, $100.5 million contract following his impressive 14-3 season with the Minnesota Vikings. Recent reports from OTAs suggest Darnold has not started his Seahawks career on a strong note.
Gregg Bell from the News Tribune observed that Darnold tossed two interceptions during three red-zone attempts in practice this week, contrasting with backup Drew Lock’s sharp performance. Additionally, Seattle has also drafted former Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe with their 92nd overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
In a conversation with coach Mike Macdonald, there was curiosity about any possible scenario where a different quarterback might start. Macdonald firmly stated, > “Sam’s our starting quarterback.”
Macdonald noted that the media’s rapid assessment of player performance after just one practice is questionable, as they haven’t even begun full-contact drills.
He expressed confidence in Darnold’s capabilities, remarking on his previous season performance: 66.2% passing accuracy with 4,319 yards, 35 touchdowns, and only 12 interceptions. While those stats are impressive, Darnold’s end to that season raised concerns, highlighted by their wild-card exit against the Los Angeles Rams after a disappointing finale against the Detroit Lions.
The debate remains about whether Darnold can maintain his momentum without his former coach Kevin O’Connell. The Seahawks hope he has made strides necessary to become a long-term leader for their offense.
