Landon Donovan Discusses USMNT's Crucial Year Before the World Cup

Retired U.S. soccer star Landon Donovan emphasizes the importance of effort and responsibility ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Retired U.S. men’s national team star Landon Donovan believes that the final year before the 2026 World Cup will be crucial for the host team, offering a chance to correct their course prior to the tournament next June.

The USMNT returns to action with a pre-Gold Cup friendly against Turkiye, marking their last opportunity to earn silverware before the World Cup. Head coach Mauricio Pochettino will be working with an inexperienced squad due to injuries to key players like Antonee Robinson and commitments from others like Weston McKennie for the Club World Cup. Star player Christian Pulisic is also absent as he recuperates from a demanding season at AC Milan. This Gold Cup and the preceding friendlies give an opportunity for rising talents to establish themselves ahead of the World Cup, according to Donovan.

“Some players on the brink have a big opportunity because others have struggled,” Donovan stated. “Diego Luna, Brian White, and Patrick Agyemang are excellent examples of those whose performance could lead them onto a World Cup roster. Established players should be aware that a few bad games can result in someone else stepping up and taking their place."
“It doesn’t matter who’s coaching. If the effort isn’t there, we have no chance. We could get embarrassed on home soil, so players need to step up, regardless of the coach,” Donovan added.

Donovan elaborated that the obligation to perform is a tribute to the players who came before, reinforcing the responsibility resting on their shoulders. He also noted that recent performances had raised concerns over the USMNT’s competitive edge, a sentiment echoed by Donovan himself earlier in the year.

Despite his criticisms, Donovan remains optimistic about the group’s potential, acknowledging Pulisic’s remarkable form and success this season with 17 goals and 10 assists. As the World Cup approaches, he emphasizes that the fresh faces must seize their chances during this pivotal year.

“Any player who isn’t getting consistent minutes should seek opportunities elsewhere to ensure they’re match-ready for the World Cup,” he advised. Donovan reiterated, “Playing time is key, especially with the home advantage we’ll have during the tournament.”
