Draymond Green Disagrees with LeBron James on NBA Playoff Format Proposal
Golden State Warriors' Draymond Green voices his disagreement with LeBron James' proposal regarding changes to the NBA playoff format.
Draymond Green is not supportive of LeBron James’ suggestion for the NBA to incorporate a break between the conclusion of the regular season and the beginning of the playoffs, aiming to better prepare players for the post-season. James shared his thoughts on this proposal during an episode of the Mind the Game podcast, illustrating the physical strain an 82-game season imposes on players.
“If they’re going to allow it to be as physical as it is, you’ve got to give us a little time to prepare for it,” said James. “Maybe 12 to 15 games left in the regular season. Like a month. Give us a month to prepare for it. Because it goes from zero to 100.”
Green has a different perspective.
“I know Bron talked about there being a month off before the playoffs, (but) I don’t know that that’s possible,” he noted on The Draymond Green Show. “A, guys will get a bit out of shape and can have an adverse effect, guys getting back in, and all of a sudden, you pull something because it’s been a month.”
Green has historically voiced his dissent on multiple aspects of the modern NBA, previously describing it as “very boring” due to its excessive reliance on three-pointers and fast-paced plays.
In response to James’s suggestion, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has indicated no intentions to alter the current structure of the regular season or implement James’ idea of a hiatus before the playoffs.
When questioned about the potential impact of recent injuries to notable players like Jayson Tatum and Stephen Curry, Silver remarked:
“I mean, there’s a certain cadence to the playoffs. If anything, there is more spacing in the playoff games than when you and I grew in the NBA. We used to frequently play playoff games back-to-back on the weekends.”
Silver assured that the league will continue to examine this issue thoroughly and emphasized that adjustments will be made based on analyzed data. He stated,
“I don’t think there’s any magic bullets here. In fact, injuries are considerably down this playoffs from what it’s been historically.”
