NBA Commissioner Adam Silver Discusses Expansion Plans, Anticipates Formal Steps This Summer
Adam Silver, the NBA Commissioner, shares insights on the league's current stance regarding expansion and hints at potential developments after the upcoming board of governors meeting.
Despite widespread speculation regarding NBA expansion to cities like Seattle and Las Vegas, Commissioner Adam Silver indicates that the league isn’t ready to formally pursue adding teams yet. However, he hinted at potential changes next month during a board of governors meeting.
“I’d say the current sense is we should be exploring it,” Silver stated during a press conference. “I don’t think it’s automatic because it depends on your perspective on the future of the league… there are underserved markets in the United States and elsewhere that deserve to have NBA teams.”
Silver emphasizes a cautious approach to expansion, insisting that the topic will be a major focus at the upcoming owners’ meeting in Las Vegas.
“If a decision is made to further explore expansion possibilities, it would lead to a more formal process,” he concluded.
This conversation about expansion also ties into larger issues facing the league, including the stability of regional sports networks. Silver explained that several regional networks have either shut down or are in precarious financial positions, although he remains optimistic about future media opportunities.
